Prompting a deeper understanding of human cultures through the visual arts, the Bowers Museum has partnered with major museums worldwide, including the British Museum, to bring in a wide variety of art objects from around the world. With a collection of items dating back to the tribal cultures that once thrived on many continents and island groups, the museum's holdings continue up to art from the modern era. The museum has a large collection of art from the various cultures that existed in the California region, including Native American communities, European missionaries and Gold Rush pioneers. Located near downtown, the museum is close to the child-friendly Discovery Science Center and the historic Dr. Howe-Waffle House and Medical Museum.
